About Me

My photo
I love makeup. For 2 years now I've been following beauty blogs and logging into YouTube to check out all the new trends. This is my sophomore blog.

Thursday, December 2, 2010

Wow it's been forever! I apologize as things have been truly insane here on my end. I'm back in the city from a two month hiatus in upstate NY helping my mom recover from her biking accident. It's really amazing how it feels to be gone so long and then return- almost like you were never gone, but in a foggy dreamlike state for a while.

Any who, I've managed to become less obsessed with acquiring products/makeup and the like and more interested in using up products, paring down, streamlining and finding the best of the best (but only what I really really need). So in other words, a minimalist approach, but with some fun excess. The hard work of sending in applications to graduate schools and taking the GRE has paid off and I was admitted to 5 of the 6 schools to which I applied. The school I ended up selecting admitted me to their PhD in Mathematics program as well as offered me a Teaching Assistant position that not only frees me of paying for tuition, but also grants me a monthly stipend. Being paid to go to school- can't beat that!

As many other beauty bloggers/youtubers have found, the beauty community is becoming increasingly catty and challenged by readers/viewers. This is unfortunate as I entered the arena hoping to share my love for makeup and not to be faced with adversary. I also noticed that my videos were almost all hauls- exciting they are, but I needed a lot more diversity. I took down all my videos and vowed to put more effort into YouTube and this blog. Now that I will be a teaching assistant and also in year 1 of 7 more years of college  (!!!!), I need to be more wise with spending. This will make an interesting challenge for cosmetic and product purchasing.

One of my favorite YouTubers is tsandra5 who has embarked on a LolliPop26-ish project 10 pan. There's nothing better for me than throwing away packaging and knowing that I've taken full advantage of the product and gotten my money's worth. This will be another focus here. It's also the perfect opportunity to review the product, as the newness has worn off, you've used the whole thing (know it is worth it)  and can give a complete review- not just your aspirations for your new purchase.

Fall Favorites: Nail Polishes

Lately, I've become rather obsessed with nail polish. It's fun, different yet not radical and relatively cheap. So these colors above are my favorites for the season and the ones I've found myself reaching for over and over.

(From L to R):
OPI Ski Teal We Drop
OPI Lincoln Park After Dark
Sephora by OPI Under My Trench Coat

The first two are without shimmer and gorgeous, deep fall colors. Ski Teal we Drop is a different blue than I usually see and I knew I had to own Lincoln Park After Dark because of my current location.
When MAC's F/W Nail trend was released, I was in love with Earthly Harmony, but after some research discovered Sephora's version was cheaper and had a better application (MAC formulas are famously hated). Amazing "griege" shade. Perfect for fall.

I'm up in Montreal for a few days on vacation. Gross weather so far- lots of rain. I'm trying to scope out a new knitting project. This may be a good task for tomorrow. The cold weather is making me want some new cold weather accessories that will be a snap to make.

Flashback Find: GAP Dream Body Spray

Remember the breakout of bodysprays? I'm thinking it was mid 90s and came with the explosion of Bath & Body Works. I think I was in the 8th grade and I discovered this scent. Lovely.
The description found online: Dream is a mix of white freesia orange flower and pure cloud.
And yes it is.
It's amazing how scents can throw you back to the last times worn. Body sprays are so easy and cheap, I couldn't resist picking this up for $3.99 at the GAP outlet near my house.

Maybelline Smooth Mousse Foundation

A new foundation? Yes, I couldn't pass this up when I found the Maybelline sale at Ulta. Buy one get one 50% off! I've been hearing amazing things about this foundation from the two Ginas on YouTube, so I had to see for myself what all the talk was about. This stuff is great! I love the coverage, medium and buildable, but not cakey. Love the application- creamy and smooth (as to be expected by the name). Never applied foundation with a sponge before, but the one included isn't bad and is quite efficient (although with a lot of usage, I'd recommend buying disposable sponges). I've been using this for about a month now and have no reason to switch to anything else. I think I paid $7 for this and my shade is in 200 Creamy Nude.

MAC Venomous Villains

Well well, another MAC collection to be released this week (perhaps today or tomorrow at maccosmetics.com). Initially, I bought into the excitement of this collection and felt I NEEDED TO HAVE IT!! As time has passed (and perhaps it's just too many collections in a row), I now feel I can pass on most, or all of the collection.  Malificent is badass- but really the only one. So here's my list before the revelation:
Both MES from Malificent
Briar Rose Beauty Powder
Toxic Tale Lipstick
Stange Potion Lipglass
Revenge is Sweet Lipglass

My reasoning these aren't absolutely necessary:
-I really never wore the Style Black MESs so that will likely be the case with these.
-Briar Rose is a lot like Well Dressed or maybe NARS Angelika minus the sparkle.
- Toxic Tale is gorg!( I may just order this and this alone), but a color I'm honestly never going to wear.
-Strange Potion is similar (not an exact dupe) to Perennial High Style from Liberty of London (and this I rarely reach for). Also similar to Jazzed (I've heard).
Revenge is Sweet is really the only one I don't have anything really like, but again, is another lipglass really necessary?

These are my thoughts and if I were to get anything, those listed above I feel are the best choices. Also maybe the beauty powder "Oh So Fair".

some of the best swatches can be found at naturalnchicmakeup (and no, not knocking temptalia, but everyone knows her swatches!).
Happy Monday!

By the way, I'm thinking of lightening my hair like this:

Illamasqua's Katie Blush

Wow what a lucky find!! When I made a random trip to Sephora here, I found out they had Illamasqua stock! I was beyond excited, but managed to only walk away with one of their blushers, Katie. I've heard very good things about this blush and since I'm in love with Excite, I figured this would be another fantastic selection.

Katie is a beautiful cool shade of pink. Very pigmented. I thought this would be a unique color for me. At the time of my purchase, my mom asked me, "How do you keep track of what you already have?" and "Isn't that a color you already own?". I shrugged this off and thought no way! this is a fantastically different shade! I must have it!

Low and behold, she was right. I had packed a small amount of makeup to my trip to NY (even though I may be here a few months) and also had Well Dressed from MAC in my bag. Very similar to Katie and I even think has a nicer finish. Katie comes off almost chalky- lots of powder. MAC's is well milled with some shimmer (not a lot, but just enough).

I'm also at the point in makeup collecting that I don't think it's really necessary to collect all of the infinitely similar products. This is close enough to Katie (maybe not an exact dupe), but on the cheek, I think it's hard to tell a difference.
I'd pick the very popular Well Dressed over Katie any day. Sorry Illamasqua, you will be returned to Sephora.

CCO Haul

I know, I know- I really need to get a little more creative here. Hauls and some reviews don't make a beauty blog, but this was great. Before I went to NY, I stopped at the CCO and found these great finds:

Wow this is a beautiful color!! I had wanted this a while ago and never realize it was being discontinued until I saw it at the CCO. If you are lusting a dark plummy/ink color, this is it. It is a Matte2. After I got it home, I realized it is pretty similar to Indian Ink (pro color), but I'm still glad I grabbed this, as it is more purple than II.

Holiday Pigments

Gorgeous!! The same day, I picked up Melon pigment (my first pigment). That purchase started a major interest in pigments and because these were so cheap (I think $24), I knew I had to have them. These came out last holiday with Make Up Art Cosmetics. Great metallic colors and jardin aires!!

Light over Dark Mineralized Blush

I wasn't addicted to makeup when this came out with Grand Duos, but I did pass on it with

Gorgeous! Creates such a wonderful bronzy/warm glow on the cheek and I love the shimmer- just enough. Definitely on the warmer side of bronze, but I think it looks great as a contour as well as blush. Now I need a new highlight powder to complement my other blushes. I'm thinking Mary Lou Manizer from the Balm. What do you think?

Love these. I always forget how amazing the deals are at the CCO. I also saw the Mineralize set that contained nuance blush and Shimpagne- which I think was around $50, but I passed.

Long time no post?!?

Wow I've been a bad bad beauty blogger!
What's been going on?
Had a crazy busy summer with working two jobs. Then I decided to apply to graduate school for Jan 2011- all the applications are in now.
Then- my mom broke her arm. So, I'm home taking care of her and resting up away from the big city. She lives in upstate NY (where I grew up) with no cell phone reception, no cable and very intermittent internet (which I just set up). A big adjustment to say the least.
Bring on the blogging!

MAC Fabulous Felines on Sale Now!

This was just released online today-- very exciting!! I wanted to be really good, but things didn't turn out as well as I'd hoped. First order was good- 2 things, second order was - 2 things and third was 4 :(

I completely passed on the eyeshadow quads because I didn't think pigmentation was worth it and uniqueness of color wasn't enough to purchase.

Of Royalty was my sole lipstick purchase, although I'm really thinking about Kittenish (this might just be because Temptalia listed it as a "Must Have") and Drive me Wild.

No Lip glosses-- need to pare down my collection!

Pet Me and Utterly Game. I know, I have wayyy too much blush- but these are GORGEOUS!!
Pet me is a warm pink (nothing that I have) and Utterly game looks just like Ripe Peach (that I missed out on!).  I think these will go very quickly.

Lithe Pigment: my very first pigment, very exciting! I really wanted Mauvement and Bloodline too (these I may reconsider), but the fall out of Mauvement deterred me and Bloodline is gorgeous, but very dark (not that versatile).

Smoky Heir and On the Hunt Superslick eyeliners. These I am incredibly excited about!!! I LOVE the cat eye and am always working to perfect it. The purple is gorgeous and different than my coastal scents one (that dyes the eye!) and the black looks blacker than any other black liquid liner I own.

And from the Nail collection, I got Rain of Flowers (a gorgeous dark purple/blue) and Earthly Harmony (great nude with some shimmer- unique).

So that is all. Yes, unfortunately. I'm going to pass on most of the Venomous Villains Collection, so this justifies it.

T3 Medium Duality Flat Iron

I had the opportunity to try this the other day to freshen up my hair. I am soo glad I did! I upgraded a few years ago to a CHI and I thought that was the best, until now. Because of my thick, course and naturally curly hair, I really need hot hot heat to tame the mane. This gets a lot hotter than my CHI and it also stays hot more consistently (and not to mention T3's Tourmaline technology). My hair turned into silk super fast (literally with one pass!) and it was shiny and healthy looking. As soon as I sell my CHI, this is my upgrade!

Oh and I found it on amazon for $119! (retails for $160)

From Amazon:

Through T3's patented Tourmaline technology, the infused plates and heaters create a non-damaging, shiny, frizz-free finish. Now T3 has added superior SinglePass Technology to create the most advanced styling irons: a heat injection of 450°F / 232°C, 25 percent faster straightening, equipped with dual voltage for easy overseas travel, and SmartPipes 2.0 - an upgraded, powerful computer system with more precise sensors working instantaneously to keep plates at a consistent temperature. Orly's Cosmic FX Fall 2010 Nail Polish Collection

I was SUPER excited to get this home from Ulta. They look amazing in the bottle and the multidimensional duo chrome (is that redundant?) is unique. Although my nails look opaque, it took 3-4 coats of each to obtain such a thick coloring. They go on sheer and I feel the underlying color shows up a little streaky. Although unique looking, the second shade not pictured on my nails (galaxy girl) wasn't really any different than other dark, vampy nail polishes. The green/blue duochrome was nice, but not enough to warrant spending $10 for a new shade. So that was returned. I couldn't part with the blue shade - so lovely.

Every few months I tend to go on a huge uncluttering spree. Throwing things out, donating to Sallys and selling on craigslist and eBay. So that's where I am now. Trying to scale down on expenses, save money and get rid of everything that I don't use on a regular basis. Make life more simple. I'm trying to make a conscience effort to keep this state of mind going and not fall back into hoarding and messiness (I'm really not that bad :) ).

So I've found some amazing websites if you're interested in this "simple" living kick I'm on.

unclutterer.com  and  zenhabits.org are fantastic resources that have a lot of links posted if you are looking for advice not spoken to on the site.

I've been going to unclutterer the most and reading most of the comments below posts--- this has helped the most and helped me think of solutions for my life. Time management and routines is the current focus.

Thoughts on MAC's Dare to Wear

MAC Dare to Wear

As I'm sure many of you know, this collection was released last Thursday (July 29). I was pretty excited about it and ordered these two shadows as soon as I saw the collection online on Tuesday. Shock-a-holic (the purple color) has HORRIBLE payoff. A big chalky, streaky mess. I was most excited about Going Bananas and even heard that this color would be the first product from the collection to sell out. When I tried it on, I just realized it wasn't as special as I'd hoped and it wasn't something that I'd wear more than a few times. I've tried Atlantic Blue before--- again, horrible payoff. Just really difficult to work with. I have the pro color, aqua and this is nice, although as Temptalia has said, can be pretty chalky (although easier to work with than some of the other mattes).

As for the lipglosses--- they are AMAZING! I tried on the lightest pink color ( I can't remember the name) and it looked nice (actually just like Pervette lipstick with more pink), but felt even better. I love the liquid lipstick feel-- like a thick gloss- but not sticky. Very nice feeling. I'm trying to scale down on shopping and especially makeup purchases that will just end up sitting in my drawer--- so I passed on these. If I do go back, I will probably pick up the hot pink color (can't remember the name)- this was nice. The coral/orange color looks just like the lip gelee released in the Lillyland Collection (brash and bold?), but in this case- a different feel, I guess.

Hope you guys are well--- Sorry I've been so neglectful of this space. Working two jobs this summer has killed my free time, but I'm working hard at regaining some normalcy.

My New Hair!!

I did it!!! A week ago, I got my hair done and am loving it! They had to cover the blonde with red first, then brown- so it is warmer than I had before, and I like it much more than last time I went dark! I've noticed my hair is a lot healthier looking and seems more smooth.

Yay for drastic hair coloring :)

Hope you guys are well--- I'm really going to get on the posting wagon soon and keep this up to date.

Quick update

So I just wanted to apologize for not keeping this updated and being gone for so long! I've been crazy busy working this summer and job searching for the fall. I'm planning on kicking up posting mode soon and making more youtube videos shortly.

I'm going to put up a blog sale soon and right now I'm trying to sell my supersalono hair dryer (will accept any reasonable offers) and my Chi 1" ceramic flat iron (both in my new hairstyling video haul).

The above image is from Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale and boy is it amazing! Lots of things $100-$150 lower than usual prices!!

NARS Multiple Tints: Swatches

NARS Multiple Tints

So I ran across these at the store this weekend and had to give you guys a good swatch. I was soooo excited to try these out, but they are WAYYYY sheerer than I expected (not bad though!!).

The top is Turks & Cacos, then below is Cadeques and at the bottom is Beverly Hills.

I was going to get Turks & Cacos-- but it was sold out, so I settled with Cadeques. Turks & Cacos is the sheerest and I figured I already have enough orange/coral blushes.

What I love about the formula is the glossy texture. It leaves a nice, dewey sheen on your cheek. Very natural and perfect for summer!

NARS Pure Sheer SPF Lip Treatment

NARS Pure Sheer SPF Lip Treatment in Lava

Wow I'm loving this!!! When I heard about these being released, I wasn't sure if I'd be into them. After trying this on, I feel in love with the creamy texture and light coverage!

Has a thick consistency-- almost like Fresh's Sugar Lip Treatment- but maybe a little less thick. The light pink is subtle, but it does show up with some shine.

Loving the SPF for the summer too!

Fresh Brown Sugar Hand Cream--- the best of the best?

Fresh Brown Sugar Hand Cream
I was browsing the Fresh  line at C.O. Bigelow and stumbled upon this lovely hand cream. I've heard great things about the Brown Sugar Body Scrub- which I too tried (passed because I'm trying to finish up my Clinique Skin Sparkle-- which barely has a dent in it!!). So after the skin scrub, I applied this to my hands. I first have to say that this is one of the  most lovely scents I've ever had the pleasure of experience. It's a lemon/sugar scent and it reminds me of a super nice lemonade on a hot summer day. Very clean. It's quite thick and as soon as it is applied, it is absorbed by your skin. It leaves a nice, supple texture to your hands that lasts and lasts.

From Amazon:

  Product Description

Bethenny Frankel's Naturally Thin & Healthy Eating Goals

Bethenny Frankel's Naturally Thin

I was a sucker and paid $16 for this at Borders--- really cheap at Amazon, but I really wanted it and wanted to get motivated to get healthy again. So far, the book is a really good read and a lot of it makes sense. Bethenny talks about "rules" she's set up to being "Naturally Thin" that start with treating eating like your bank account. It's all about balance. So if you eat something like pasta for lunch, you need to balance out the starches with vegetables and meat in the evening. This makes a lot of sense and I think a lot more doable than counting every calorie that you eat.

Another point I liked is "the differential", meaning the difference between eating something really healthy and something horrible for you, but really really tasty. She uses an example of eating beef chili and turkey chili. Both of these taste similar so eating the "unhealthy" version with beef isn't worth the extra calories to her than eating the turkey version. Another choice between poached chicken breast and butter cooked NY strip steak has a huge differential. She'd much rather enjoy eating the steak (who wouldn't!?) than eating the chicken-- so the pleasure difference, or differential is much greater with the steak.

I'm going to use this as motivation--- eating more healthy and working out regularly. I feel like I've slipped into a habit of obsessing- over sweets, cravings etc. I want to eat- not out of necessity for pleasure. I would also like to work out at least 4 times a week- 30 minutes of cardio and 15 or so of weight training. I'm at 151, but I'd like to get down to maybe 135.

Kiehl's Super Straightening Cream
I got this as a sample a long time ago and just cracked it open this morning when I was straightening my hair. I was surprised what a great "slip" it has- if that makes sense. It's a substantial cream, but not too thick and not oily. Coated my hair very well and it remained easy to manage and silky all day.

Couldn't find this on the Kiehl's website, but think they may have replaced it with The Heat Protecting Silk-Straightening Cream:

Formulated especially for wavy, frizzy, or curly hair in need of smoothing, our unique straightening cream contains a blend of natural ingredients to help straighten out hair and tame frizz without weighing hair down. Infused with extracts derived from Soy Beans, Sesame Seeds and Sunflower Seeds, this unique formulation locks out humidity while conditioning and protecting hair from over-drying and breakage. Light and greaseless, our straightening cream gives hair an ultra-straight and silky-smooth look with incredible shine.

Lush Mint Julips Lip Scrub

Lush Mint Julips Lip Scrub
After hearing some hype about this product on youtube and from Lollipop26, I knew I'd have to give it a try. It seems counterintuitive, but whenever I regularly moisturize my lips, I find that I need to exfoliate almost daily. It's been hard to apply lipstick on the go because I've been noticing unexpected unevenness.

I decided on the Mint Julips because 1 I love mint and 2 I love chocolate/sweetness and 3 mint chocolate ice cream is my fav!! The other flavor was bubblegum and I sweet lips (??), but I thought this was the best. Bubblegum is self explanatory (not a huge fan in general) and sweet lips is a chocolate flavor. I felt like this was definitely effective for scrubbing lips clean, but I noticed the messiness in application.
The first time I tried this, I think the portion I took out of the pot actually fell off my finger and into the sink. So I wouldn't necessarily take this with me for application out of the house. Because of this, I think I ended up using a little more than usual- but maybe I'm not using it entirely correctly. Bonus is that when you're done scrubbing, you just lick this off your lips and you get a sweet treat out of it :)

C.O. Bigelow Lemon Scented Candle

C.O. Bigelow Lemon Scented Candle
I picked this along with two other Bigelow candles (vanilla and coconut) the other night. The store is having a buy any 2 Bigelow products and receive the third for free. So for $40.00 I got 3 huge candles that will last forever.

Right now I have this set in my bathroom and burned it for the first time this morning during my shower. Strongly scented, yet not overpowering and the lemon smells genuine-- not like Mr. Clean or anything artificial. As a bonus, after use the glass container with lid can serve as a fantastic q-tip, cotton ball or other bathroom necessity holder.

C.O. Bigelow Premium Shave Cream

C.O. Bigelow Premium Shave Cream
So this is marketed to men, but I grabbed it to do the deed on myself. Extremely thick cream that lathers well and creates a great barrier for shaving. This was made by Proraso, the maker of the #1 shaving cream in Italian barber shops. Eucalyptus is a main ingredient, so your body (legs, arms...) experience an amazing tingle sensation after use. I really don't think it comes off smelling masculine, just clean and somewhat neutral in scent.

Right now at C.O. Bigelow this is on promotion for only $5!!! In fact all men's shaving products are on sale for $5--- time to stock up for father's day!!

iPhones available for Pre-Order on Apple.com!!

Wow, really excited for this!! I know, not beauty related, but I check all my blogs on the go on my phone already. So the white is currently unavailable for pre-order and delivery on the website- this is the color I want :( If you pre-order, you can either pick up in store on June 24th or it will deliver to you on that date (this is the option I'd opt for. Waiting in long lines at apple...blech!)

The Body Shop Coconut Oil Hair Shine

The Body Shop Coconut Oil Hair Shine $10 for 1.7 FL OZ

I saw this on BellduJourNYC's youtube favorites video. Her hair sounds a lot like mine in texture so I splurged and ordered this on their website. Shipping was fantastic- I think like $2!

The tin is really convenient for travel and for just throwing in your purse to make touchups through the day. I have really dry ends and naturally curly hair that turns into frizz as soon as it enters a humid climate, so I'm always looking for something to maintain order. The product has a great coconut scent and is slightly oily, but easy to work with.

On the back of the tin: Smooths, adds shine, conditions and repairs. Smooth over dry hair.

Easy to carry, nice scent, conditions and adds shine. A great value for $10.

Product I'm Loving: Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm

Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm
I got this a long time ago (as evidenced by the wear on the packaging!), but just recently rediscovered it and have been using it nightly. It has a subtle honey-pollen scent- kind of like smelling daisies (if that makes sense??). Thick consistency, but not too much and has a nice grab to the lips. Does an amazing job at moisturizing lips and stays on all night.

From Amazon:
Chock full of ingredients to make your lips kissably soft and seductively sweet, Honey Trap moisturizes with Shea butter and olive oil, holds in moisture with honey and beeswax and tastes sweet like white chocolate and vanilla (because that's what's in it!). Smooth on some of this heavenly sweet mixture and you'll bare a remarkable resemblance to a temptress used as bait in a trap (think James Bond); this balm will attract lots of honeys to you for kissing. Note: This product may melt and is NOT guaranteed to arrive solid during the summer months!

I usually scrape out a bit with the back of my nail to grab enough product and this has proved to be the best method of application. When I first got this, I used a lip brush and would carry it with me in my bag. This was pretty messy and I ended up giving up on using it.
